Have you heard or recall the phrase “light of day”? Variations include “by the light of day”, “emerge in the light of day”, “to see the light of day”, etc. It is generally thought to mean that things became clearer once we have light to support our view.
Light is generally thought of as a positive thing. After all, have you ever heard of anyone being afraid of the light? While light is better for seeing things, the dark (negativity) can also show things as well.
As an early traveler and with the sun coming up later, I have noticed things on my trips that I did not notice in July. As an example, the food store whose lights are out and whose sign spells out OD Food Market. Do you really want to shop at an OD(D) Food Market? Businesses and their employees may not think others will notice their dereliction of duty (keeping the signs lit up) – but I am here to tell you others do notice, and it sends a message about attention to detail and commitment to the place they work.
It is also interesting to me that folks think that little ventures into the darkness (misbehaving, lack of respect for others, self-centeredness) would go unnoticed by others. It does not.
It is sort of like the food store not thinking that the burnt-out lights will not be noticed by others. Behavior, both good or bad (or indifferent), gets noticed. Fortunately, I believe that most folks want to do the right thing. Most folks will respect others, help when needed, and work to find solutions.
It is never too late to change behavior. After all, a new day starts with the rising of the sun and the bringing of the light.
