Letters From Leton: Did You Notice Something?

As my wife’s parents have gotten older, they need help with a few things. My benefit to them (using my Junior IT Certificate) is to help with technical things around the house, such as computers, internet, and cable (they are still tied to the cord).

At one time, I had used my Gmail account with their Cable Company to order and confirm the order of replacement equipment. So it was to my surprise that on Friday of last week, I received an email notification that the cable bill (which is also for the phone and the home security system) was late and service would be discontinued.

This was very much unlike my wife’s mom, who is a fanatic when it comes to paying bills. Spending hours reviewing her records ( I mean hours….). She’s had some recent health issues – maybe she missed the bill? With so many folks coming in and out helping with things, maybe they had mislaid the bill. Could the bill be in someone’s car somewhere? Perhaps the billing statement didn’t arrive in the mail, or is the mail zeitgeist somewhere out there? Late or lost mail is growing more common.

In any event, I jumped online, paid the bill along with the late fee, and assured my wife’s dad he’d be able to watch his westerns over the weekend. My thoughts then turned to the fortunate usage of my email address in supporting my in-laws’ account, along with the benefits of having a device that can receive text and email alerts. It reinforced the importance of PVB offering online banking services and text alerts like our Notifi SecureAlerts.

For those of us who are of a certain age or certain inclination, using technology and its benefits are second nature. To others (seniors, small businesses), Technology can be intimidating or, at a minimum, something that they just don’t have time to learn.

That is where PVB can come in – it is up to us to educate and promote the benefits of technology to our customers. Real-time notices and alerts are a lot better than a piece of paper that has to travel through many hands before it gets to the customer. Text Alerts don’t get lost in the mail. It is PVB’s goal to take our customer support to another level and be a “tech” buddy to customers who lack knowledge or confidence.

Have a great week. – Leton
